Helping Kids Find Peace When Life Feels Scary

Fear is one of those things that we all deal with, even as adults.

Yet for kids, it can be especially intense. Not only is the world still new to them, but the unknowns can bring in random fears that we, ourselves, may have grown out of or never had. Whether that’s hearing a storm, the dark closet being open at night, or something under the bed, kids experience fear in many different ways.

And as parents, our first instinct is often to fix it. We turn on a nightlight, check the closet, or explain that thunder is simply part of a storm. Maybe we even comfort our kids with a hug, or even their favorite stuffed animal.

Those are all good ways to help kids address fear. They need that comfort and reassurance. But there is a deeper truth underneath those helpful comforts.

That truth? That Jesus is not surprised by the storm.

That doesn’t mean that we tell our kids, “you shouldn’t be scared.” Fear is real, and kids need space to talk about it honestly.

But the story of Jesus calming the storm gives kids a picture that they can hold onto. In Mark 4:35-41 Jesus is with His disciples in a boat when a powerful storm comes. The disciples are terrified. The waves are crashing. Everything feels chaotic and yet, Jesus was asleep.

When His followers were panicking, Jesus was resting.

When they wake Him, Jesus speaks to the storm and tells it to be still. The wind stops. The sea becomes calm. The disciples are left asking, “Who is this?”

That question matters. Because the story is not only about Jesus fixing bad weather. It shows us who Jesus is. He has authority over the storm. He is not shaken by what shakes us. He is present with His people. And He brings peace because peace is part of who He is.

That is the heart behind our Flynn Files episode. In the story, Flynn travels through the “doggy door” portal and finds himself in the middle of a loud, scary storm near Galilee. Through his investigation, he sees a boat, frightened people, and one sleeping man who stands and brings calm. By the end, the team decodes the clue: peace.

It is silly, dog-filled, and full of little jokes because kids connect with story before they connect with a lecture. But underneath the fun is a truth worth talking about: when life feels scary, Jesus is not shaken.

Watch the episode together!

As you watch, try not to turn it into a lesson too quickly. Let them enjoy the adventure. Then pay attention to what your child notices.

  • Do they talk about the storm?

  • Do they laugh at Flynn being scared?

  • Do they ask how Jesus stopped the wind?

  • Do they connect the story to a time they felt afraid?

Sometimes the best conversations happen when we simply watch alongside our kids and leave room for them to respond. This episode is especially helpful for reinforcing the timeless truth kids can hold onto when they’re afraid: Jesus is peace.

It’s more than “Jesus makes things peaceful,” though that part can be true. Jesus is peace even before the storm ends because He is the Son of God, who has authority over everything.

Talk About It With Your Kids

After watching, you can use a few simple questions to help your child connect the story to real life.

Here are some conversation starters:

  1. What part of the storm seemed the scariest to Flynn?

  2. How do you think the people in the boat felt when the waves were crashing?

  3. Why do you think Jesus was able to sleep during the storm?

  4. What are some things that make you feel afraid or worried?

  5. What can we remember about Jesus when we feel scared?

Try not to rush their answers. If your child says something small like, “Thunder scares me,” that is a meaningful opening. You do not have to give a long explanation. You might simply say:

“Yeah, thunder can feel really loud. I’m glad we can talk to Jesus when we feel scared.”

That kind of response helps faith feel connected to real life, not like a separate Sunday-school answer.

A Short Prayer for Parents and Kids

Jesus, thank You that You are with us when we feel afraid. Help us remember that You are not shaken by the things that scare us. Teach us to trust You, talk to You, and remember that You are peace. Amen.

A Reminder for Parents

This won’t be an overnight fix. Sometimes kids need to hear the same truth repeatedly for it to be truly embedded in their hearts.

That’s okay!

Faith grows through those consistent little moments that, when combined together, create a lasting, solid foundation of faith in Jesus.

You don’t have to explain it perfectly. You don’t have to have some sort of lesson plan. You can simply address the moments as they come in simple ways, always reminding them of this simple truth: Jesus is peace.
